So I noticed :)

I've already done exactly that in the development tree, which I'll release
as 1.9.8 as soon as I can test everything else I've changed.

A lot of users don't plan on having 500MB thrown in /var when they partition
it out (or more if they're encoding several cd's simultaneously).
Also, 500MB pales in comparison to the size of music archives most abcde
users create.
Feel free to change WAVOUTPUTDIR to /var/tmp on your own system, but I'm
not gonna make it the default.
