I've been thinking about the same thing for the past few months (and came
up with the same acronym :).
A frontend utility would be nice, but abcde would be a bad starting point
because almost nothing abcde does would apply. Abdvde wouldn't have to do
any external information retrieval, it would rely on the kernel's support
for UDF instead of CDDA, it would have to call lots of programs that can't
legally be hosted on public US servers, but only once per disc instead of
a dozen times or so, it would probably need to magically determine
clipping for widescreen DVD's, etc.
Also, a patent-free video compression format such as Ogg Tarkin won't be
available for a long time (VP3 won't be it either).
I'm pleasantly surprised to see continuing work on reverse engineering the
IFO files and NAV packets (see the libdvdread1 package in debian unstable)
though.
Oh, and before I can lead the way on any of this, I need to actually get a
DVD drive installed in one of my computers :)
