This construction produces a right line divided into equal segments that may be used as a scale without assistance of a ruled straightedge; its reliability depends almost entirely on the care and precision with which the drawing is performed.

Produce a right line AB. This line will represent the full length of the scale and will be divided into a number of equal segments.

Produce Line AC at any desired oblique angle to Line AB.

Using a compass divide Line AC into any number of equal segments.

Connect the last marked point on Line AC with Point B.

Construction a series of right lines parallel to the line connecting the last marked point on Line AC to Point B. Continue each parallel line until it touches Line AB. These points will mark the points of division along Line AB.

Mark small hatch lines at the points of division along Line AB and carefully erase all other construction lines. This results in Line AB being marked off into the desired number of equal segments.
