A
raised platform connected to the interior side of a parapet that allowed
a field work's artillery armament to fire over the top of the parapet. Barbette
platforms were generally placed where ever a wide field of fire was desirable,
especially at the salient angles of a field work to cover the work's sectors
without fire. 16 1/2 feet along the interior slope of a parapet were usually
allowed for each gun to be positioned on a barbette platform with a depth
of 24 feet for recoil and service of guns on a barbette platform.
