Capital of an Angle

A line used in the design and analysis of fortifications that bisects a salient angle into two equal parts and is prolonged as far as desirable toward both the interior and exterior of the fortification. It generally reveals the prolonged center line of a salient angle's sector without fire and shows points that might require the defensive protection of artillery positioned within a salient. A capital also graphically delineates a fortification's most vulnerable points and reveals possible lines of approach where an assaulting body of troops would encounter the least amount of fire from the work before reaching the ditch.
