An
outwork designed to enclose ground exterior to the enceinte that was traced
with two or more bastion fronts of fortification. Extremities of the fronts
were terminated by demi-bastions with wings that were directed on the works
of the enceinte or demilunes. In field fortifications crownworks could be
used as tetes-de-pont to cover particularly important river passages or in
situations where the fortification did not require a closed gorge. As the
illustration of the main Confederate fortification at Columbus, Kentucky
to the right shows, field work crownworks were often terminated by irregular
branches adapted to meet the needs of a particular site. |
