A cut in the continuity of a rampart for the purpose
of producing a ditch in front of a retrenchment parapet laid out perpendicular
to the direction of the rampart. While the rampart itself was cut the scarp
revetment was not; this prevented a coupure from being used as a passageway
through the ditches of a fortification and obstructed lines of fire that
might otherwise be useful for battering the interior walls of the fortification.
