In
the bastion trace the diminished angle was formed by the intersection of
the line of defense and the exterior side of the fortified polygon, that
is, the angle of the polygon diminished by the line of defense. As with all
other elements of the bastion trace the diminished angle can not be considered
in isolation and was not, in and of itself, an important element. It was,
in fact, an effect produced by the length of the perpendicular used to produce
the lines of defense (and therefore the bastion faces) and primarily seved
as a means for checking the effectiveness and economy of the trace of particular
fortifications. The measure of the diminished angle increased as the
perpendicular increased in length in proportion to the length of the exterior
side of the fortified polygon and number of sides of the polygon. |
