Enceinte

Fort Macon: Original Image Courtesy Library of Congress and HABS/HEAR CollectionThe first continuous line of rampart or parapet of a fortification that enclosed the fortified ground.  It was the line of works specifically constructed to fortify the sides of the fortified polygon and was often referred to as the Body of the Place. All works sited within the enceinte were referred to as interior works or retrenchments, all works outside the enceinte were referred to as outworks (when within cannon range of the enceinte) or advanced works (when beyond range of the enceinte).
