An assault by main force without benefit of a breach
having been battered in the enceinte of a fortification. Escalades were
particularly distinguished by the necessity for the assaulting troops to
bring ladders forward to descend into the ditch and to ascend the scarp to
mount the parapet and drive the defenders from the rampart. This type of
attack was extremely dangerous and could lead to a severe defeat with heavy
losses suffered by the assaulting troops. |
