An
obstacle placed before the ditch of a fortification consisting of strong
vines or wires stretched between tree stumps or small pickets. Its purpose
was to trip the leading ranks of an attacking body of troops or slow their
march as they attempted to pass over the obstacle, breaking the momentum
of the attack and destroying its ensemble.
