Esplanade

Adapted From A.F. Lendy, Treatise On Fortification (1862) Page 371An open area between the glacis of the citadel of a fortified place and the body or built up area within the place. An esplanade served to separate the citadel from the rest of the fortified place and prevent civic and other inhabited structures within the enciente from interfering with the defense of the citadel after an enemy had penetrated the enciente or the body of the place had been surrendered to the enemy.
