In
the bastion system of fortification the flanked angle was the salient angle
formed by the intersection of two bastion faces. It was denominated the flanked
angle since it was was protected by crossing columns of fire delivered from
the flanks of collateral bastions. The measure of a flanked angle was determined
by the measure of the interior angle of the polygon of fortification, number
of sides and regularity of the polygon, and the length of the perpendiculars
of each side of the polygon intersecting at the angle of the polygon. |
