Garrison

Original Image Courtesy Library of CongressTroops assigned to guard or defend a fortification were referred to as a garrison. The number of troops required to defend a fortification largely depended on the importance of the fortification, the manpower resources available for its defense, and the size or linear extent of the fortification. Field fortifications were necessarily designed and traced with attention to the number of troops who would be available to garrison or defend the work.
