A
hornwork was a type of advanced fortification traced with a bastion front
consisting of two demi-bastions connected by a curtain. Exterior wings (called
branches) of the demi-bastions were prolonged toward the rear of the work
and slightly inclined toward the center of the gorge. Hornworks in permanent
fortifications were generally placed in advance of a demi-lune with the branches
directed onto the center of bastion faces. In field fortifications hornworks
could be used as bridgehead to cover river crossing points or important defiles. |
