Horizontal
members in a frame structure that support the floor decking and ceiling covering
and transmit the weight of the floor or ceiling by distributing it evenly
to wall plates or sills. In light frames joists are made to serve as girders
to bind opposite sides of the structure together and carry the weight of
the internal elements of the structure, that is, keep the floor or ceiling
from sagging from the walls toward the center of an enclosed space. |
