Plane of Defilade (Défilement)

In defilading the plane of defilade was a plane that passed five feet above and parallel to the rampant plane. This plane determined the minimum height of the interior crest necessary to prevent an enemy standing five feet above the highest point commanding ground within 1,000 yards of a field work from seeing the interior of the work.
