Profile

In fortification drawing a profile was a cross-section view of a fortification's basic outline projected on a vertical plane that was perpendicular to the general direction of the fortification's interior crest. Although profile views could be presented in a rather elegant and aesthetically pleasing fashion, the basic purpose was to graphically explain the horizontal and vertical relationships between the various surface elements that made up a particular field work's features and impart a clear understanding of that work's dimensions.
