An access structure constructed to connect two or
more standing surfaces at different altitudes within a fortification. ramps
were generally given a gentle slope on an inclined plane with a base equal
to six times the height of the upper edge of the ramp. Ramps in field
fortifications were most often used to provide easy access from the terre-parade
to barbette platforms. In permanent fortifications ramps were generally only
used on the interior side of the rampart or masonry enclosure to allow easy
passage from the parade to the terre-plein of the enclosing wall.
