The
remblai of a fortification was the volume of soil contained in or required
for the construction of the various earthen surface features of the fortification
such as the rampart, parapet, barbette platforms, and traverses. It was usually
obtained by excavation of the ditch (or deblai, soil taken from the ditch);
in most types of soil the disturbance of excavation increased the volume
of the soil so that the remblai was almost always greater than the deblai. |
