Revetment

Original Image Courtesy Library of Congress HABS/HEAR CollectionA revetment was a superficial structure designed to retain an earth slope at an angle greater than the natural angle that the soil would assume when thrown loosely into a pile. Revetments in field fortifications could be constructed from a wide variety of materials including gabions, fascines, hurdles, and sandbags. More durable materials such as brick and cut stone were used to revet slopes in permanent fortifications.
