When a fortification feature that was normally
constructed on a plane parallel to the plane of the site was given a gentle
slope for a specific purpose it was said to be constructed en rampe, or as
a ramp. Ditches of field works composing the advanced line in a line of works
with intervals that were designed to be defended by fire delivered from a
second line of works were usually constructed en rampe with a slope from
the salients toward the rear. This was done so that the entire length of
the ditch could be reached by direct fire delivered from the second line
of works. |
