Scantling

Adapted From Mahan, Treatise On Field Fortification (1861) Plate 5, Figure 34Timber sawed or milled and squared to specific dimensions (usually 6 to 12 inches in thickness) was often referred to as scantling. In field fortifications scantling was prescribed when a uniform strength of materials was required for repeating structural members such as rafters, joists, and stanchions that were expected to withstand fairly equal loads throughout the framework of a given structure.
