Vertical members of free-standing or supporting framework
structures were referred to as stanchions. Use of the term "stanchions" generally
implies that the upright members of the structure are joined at both their
upper and lower extremities to ties or rails that bind the framework together.
Frames used to line galleries in military mines, for example, were composed
of two upright stanchions tied together at the top and bottom by rails that
formed the cap and ground sills of the frame. This type of frame was also
used to support the roof and covering mass of sunken field magazines and
hold to magazines' plank lining in place against the earth walls. |
