Splinter-proof

Adapted From C.W. Pasley, Practical Operations of a Siege, Part II, Page 62.A structure was said to be splinter-proof when it could resist or absorb the impact of shell fragments and was sufficiently thick to prevent those splinters from passing through it. Traverses enclosing gun positions in batteries not exposed to enfilading fire were generally made splinter-proof to limit the effects of shell explosions and accidents within the battery.
