A
small redan shaped stockade constructed immediately in front of extrances
to fortified buildings designed to both defend the extrance and allow an
oblique fire to be brought to bear along the base of the building's exterior
wall. Timbers composing the tambor were generally to be 2 to 3 feet higher
than the doorway to prevent it from being easily scaled during an assault
and to prevent fire passing over the top of the timbers from entering the
doorway. The stockade work was to be loop-holed and given sufficient interior
space to allow 3 or 4 men to fire through the loop-holes. |
