Zig-zags

A rather informal name for boyaux and saps in an attack by regular approaches that were defiladed along their length by sudden alterations in direction to the front in a weaving back and forth pattern centered on the point of attack. The basic idea was to direct the lines of boyaux and saps toward points exterior to the fortification under attack so that the defenders could not reach the interior of the trenches with direct fire that might render the trenches unusable.
