This image set depicts an intelligent and well constructed interpretation
of Fort Maurepas at Ocean Springs, Mississippi. This fortification combined
an exterior palisading traced as an eight salient star fort with an interior
quadrilateral bastioned work. Two of the four bastions were constructed as
double level blockhouses; the upper level was open. Each face was pierced
with two embrasures on each face and each flank with one embrasure. Lower
level faces, flanks, and enclosed gorges were pierced with small loop-holes.
The other two bastions were constructed as double cased stockades with open
gorges. Curtains between the bastions were also double cased stockades.
This full scale interpretation includes the exterior palisading, one of the
blockhouse bastions, a section of the interior stockade curtain, the sally
port, and several interior structures. Although the interior is not accessible
several gaps in the palisading are large enough to allow a good view of the
interior. |
