Introductory Remarks
According to signage at the U.S. Corps of Engineers' Grenada Lake
Recreational Area this small field fort was constructed during the winter
of 1862 by Confederate forces to defend the small railroad junction town
of Grenada, Mississippi. The fort itself was sited on a high point in the
hills running along the south side of the Yalobusha River basin to command
the eastern approaches the town along the Grenada - Graysport Road. The rather
too short bastion front looks toward the east and sees the road as it rises
from the valley of a small creek that flows north into the Yalobusha River;
the gorge is the west face of the work that looks toward the town and would
be considered the unengaged side of the work. |
