Beauvoir, the last home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis,
was severely damaged during the passing of Hurricane Katrina. These images
show the place as it was in November, 2004. While the main house has been
determined to be sufficiently intact to warrant restoration, both the Library
and Hayes Cottages were rubbed out. Most of the important historical artifacts
in the two museums on the grounds were cast into the backlot and
beyond...
According to the Sun Herald and WLOX stories linked below the old
place isn't dead yet and plans are being hatched for yet another southern
resurrection. Maybe this time they'll figure out how to build a storm surge
proof museum... (think piers, big thick piers, think leave the ground floor
open to the four winds and high waves). |
