abcde doesn't have enough information to know beforehand what's data and
what's audio, so it runs the cdrom reader across all the tracks.
I've never ever seen cdparanoia hang when fed a data track - that's why
there's no checking for it.

This means either your kernel or your cdrom drive are very confused
about this situation. It's possible this is a bug in the kernel ide-scsi
code. Does it do this if you use the cdrom as a straight IDE device?
